PHILOSOPHY OF SCIENECE An Introduction of Philosophy Philosophy literally means ‘love of wisdom’, but defining it beyond this becomes a little tricky. In a nutshell, philosophy concerns itself with deep, fundamental questions: from how best we should live our lives, to the basic nature of the worlds we live in. But within this nutshell resides a whole universe of feeling, reason, and meaning. Why does anything exist? What's the right thing to do? Is the world around us ‘real’?. The aim of philosophy is not necessarily to give you the answers to these questions, but rather to equip you with the right tools to perform your own investigation — and discover the answers for yourself.   The Value of Philosophy Philosophy is a branch of human inquiry and as such it aims at knowledge and understanding. We might expect that the value of philosophy lies in the value of the ends that it seeks, the knowledge and understanding it reveals. But philosophy is rather notorious for failing to...

SCIENTIFIC EXPLANATIONS & WHY-QUESTIONS

Image
SCIENTIFIC EXPLANATIONS & WHY-QUESTIONS Thousands of years ago, our explanations about how the world worked were not very good. Things we couldn't understand were attributed to praise or vengeance from gods, or thinking the world was random. Thanks to science, we have a much better idea about why things are the way they are. Science is the study of the natural world through observation and experiment. A scientific explanation uses observations and measurements to explain something we see in the natural world. Scientific explanations should match the evidence and be logical, or they should at least match as much of the evidence as possible. SCIENTIFIC EXPLANATION Any explanation consists of two parts, the explanandum and the explanans. The explanandum is the fact that is to be explained. The explanans is that which does the explaining. It consists of whatever facts, particular or general, are summoned to explain the explanandum. An argument is simply a set of statements, Scien...

CONSEQUENCES OF SEXISM

Image
CONSEQUENCES OF SEXISM Sexism has been defined as an, “institutional and ideological system that prescribes division by gender, differentiates the social roles attributed to women and men, and ranks them in a hierarchy” (Gianettoni & Roux, 2010, p. 375). Benevolent sexism manifests itself through patronizing attitudes and beliefs that women need to be protected and cared for due to their compliance with traditional social roles and their fragility (Overall, Sibley, & Tan, 2011). Although benevolent sexism may express itself as chivalrous behavior, combined with hostile sexism, it perpetuates inequity for women. Regardless of the type of sexism experienced, the consequences of sexist oppression influences women in a variety of ways. Sexism can lead to physical, emotional, interpersonal and employment-related consequences including negative influences on cardiovascular health, the immune system, and cognitive functioning.   DIRECT CONSEQUENCES There ha...

RACE & RACISM

Image
RACE AND RACISM INTRODUCTION There aren’t too many Peoples who want to claim to be racist, and most people would like to believe they are “colorblind” when it comes to matters of race. But race and racism are integral and inescapable parts of our culture and social history. Race consciousness is key to how we learn to perceive ourselves and the people around us (even if we don’t always want to admit it); just think of how we describe people—“an young Asian woman, about five foot ; a short white man in his forties, wearing a leather shoes”. In these identifying descriptions, race, along with gender, is essential, especially if it is other than white. It shows how difficult and how complex the definitions of race and racism can be. The issues surrounding the definitions of race and racism are themselves a product of racism’s long and conflicted history in our society. Any discussion of race and racism probably should begin with definitions of the concepts involved...

ESSENTIAL RULES FOR HAPPY LIFE

Image
ESSENTIAL RULES FOR HAPPY LIFE Happiness is a positive emotional state characterized by feelings such as contentment, joy, and life satisfaction. Happy life is the feeling of truly enjoying your life, and the desire to make the very best of it. Happiness is the "secret sauce" that can help us be and do our best. Researchers found when they studied happy people: Happy people are more successful. 1. FILL YOUR LIFE WITH LOVE  We all have 24 hours in a day. For me, one of the recipes of happiness is to fill as many of those hours with love, be it work, people, passions, or even pets. Love fearlessly. Try best to do what you love for as many hours possible every day. I love entrepreneurship. We cannot control many things in life, but we can control how much love we embrace in our lives. 2. FIND YOUR PURPOSE When you find your true purpose in life, everything starts to make sense. You stop living for the weekends. You stop thinking about what you are going to do afte...

RATIONALITY

Image
RATIONALITY   Rationality implies the conformity of one's beliefs with one's reasons to believe, and of one's actions with one's reasons for action. "Rationality" has different specialized meanings in philosophy, economics, sociology, psychology, evolutionary biology, game theory and political science . IS RATIONALITY THE SAME AS REASON  Rationality is a quality of an individual to think or make decisions sensibly or logically i.e. with a valid reason. Reason is the justification for an action or event. Rationality and reason are different because Rationality originates from reason but reason does not originate from rationality. A person who is rational is always reasonable but a person who is reasonable is not always rational. Though they look like similar terms, they have very different meaning and usages.   Example;  1. Teachers value logic and rationality in their teachings.  2. There are many reasons for his good reput...
